Hydrogen
Since 2018, Navalprogetti has been at the forefront of liquid hydrogen research, development, and implementation in the maritime industry. Our pioneering efforts aim to revolutionize the sector by providing sustainable and efficient energy solutions for shipowners and shipyards. Visit the dedicated section to see our expertise, offerings, and the comprehensive support we provide to ensure the successful integration of liquid hydrogen systems on both new and existing vessels. Hydrogen as a fuel can be present onboard a ship through different physical and chemical carriers: as a pure substance stored in its cryogenic (-253°C) or compressed (350 -700 bar) state, otherwise chemical carriers, such as ammonia, methanol and LOHC, represent a valid option that implies an easier management onboard, but requires additional energy to extract the pure substance.
Ammonia
Ammonia is emerging as a potential game-changer in the marine industry, offering a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. With its high energy density and low carbon footprint, ammonia presents a compelling solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the environmental impact of shipping. Ammonia is already widely produced and transported, providing a foundation for its integration into the marine fuel market, however, challenges such as safety considerations, infrastructure development, and cost competitiveness need to be addressed to fully realize its potential.
Methanol
Methanol is a promising fuel for marine propulsion, interesting for vessels that undertake long voyages, where the need for frequent refuelling is a limitation. It offers reduced emissions and a smaller variety of pollutants when used in internal combustion engines (CO2 and water). However, technical considerations, such as the requirement for additional small amount of pilot fuel, need to be carefully evaluated to assess the overall viability of such systems.
Navalprogetti can assist ship owners and shipyards by using calculation and simulation tools to assess whether this fuel is the most suitable option for each client. Our team can then develop a feasibility or basic design study to determine how the system could be integrated into a new or existing vessel, with a particular focus on monitoring and safety systems.
